Complex treatments, that may otherwise be treated out of practice, or in a hospital can be carried out here at Mere Dentistry, thanks to our highly skilled and trained team. Such treatments include removal of impacted teeth, third molar extraction, and other difficult extractions. Our team can also perform sinus lifts, which can be necessary in order to then perform a successful dental implant treatment.
The removal of impacted teeth requires surgical extraction, which we can perform here at the practice. When teeth are impacted, this means they are buried beneath the gums. This can leave them partially visible or completely covered but, in both cases, a surgical removal will be necessary.
You will be placed under anaesthetic for this treatment, so you won’t feel a thing while the procedure is taking place, and we can usually perform the removal in 30-60 minutes, depending on the complexity of the situation and the number of teeth being treated. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, we will gently uncover and remove the tooth before packing the area. After the treatment, and once the anaesthetic has worn off, you might feel soreness, pain, or sensitivity in the area, but this can be treated with over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen.
More commonly referred to as ‘wisdom teeth’, third molar extraction is a relatively common treatment, but is by no means necessary in all patients. In fact, not all patients’ third molars erupt, and for those that do, most do not require extraction, despite the procedure being so well known. Removal of third molars is only really necessary when the patient has an already overcrowded mouth, or when the teeth are impacted or infected.
Third molar extraction is carried out under local anaesthetic, and the exact removal process will depend on whether the tooth is impacted or not. If the tooth or teeth being removed are visible above the gum line, then a simple extraction can be carried out, and the tooth or teeth will be removed carefully and gently using dental tools.
A sinus lift is a treatment that we can carry out in order to then successfully perform a dental implant procedure. In some patients, a loss of bone in the sinus cavity can prevent a dental implant from being viable, but with a sinus lift we can treat the issue before going onto successfully insert dental implants as needed.
During a sinus lift, our highly specialist team will graft bone into the area between the upper jaw and sinus membrane. This increases the bone height in the area and will allow us to then perform the necessary dental implant treatment. A loss of bone in this area is fairly common and is often caused by living with missing or decayed teeth, gum disease, complicated tooth extractions, or an accident or injury to the face.
