Acting like a cap – or indeed, a ‘crown’ – damaged teeth can be repaired to full function with the use of a crown. Sitting over the top, and covering the natural tooth, the tooth itself is left protected and fortified, thereby bringing full function back to the mouth and repairing the smile.
Crowns are used in cases where a tooth has been damaged, often as a result of advanced decay, but sometimes as a result of an injury or accident, or even simple wear and tear as the natural tooth becomes weakened and worn down as we age. In other cases, crowns are used to support and complete another treatment such as a bridge or root canal treatment.
In the past, crowns have been made of a metal such as gold which is exceptionally strong and hardwearing. Now, we’re able to provide patients with porcelain or composite crowns that fit in much more naturally with the rest of the mouth while also restoring the tooth to full function.
